A New Charter High School in Mesa That Could Change the Game for East Valley Families
There’s a new high school opening in Mesa this fall that hasn’t fully hit the radar yet...but it probably will.
It’s called NEWS Point Academy, and it’s located right on the Arizona Athletic Grounds. On paper, it checks boxes that typically don’t exist in one place...especially not at a tuition-free public charter school.
And if you’re a parent in the East Valley, this is the kind of thing that quietly changes the equation.
What Makes This School Different?
Let’s start with the basics:
- Tuition-free
- International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum
- Dual enrollment opportunities
- A built-in 90-minute athletic training block during the school day
- Sports fees capped at $250
That combination is… not normal.
Programs like this usually come with a hefty price tag...often $20,000 to $30,000 per year at private schools. Or they require families to relocate entirely to access something similar.
Now it’s here. In Mesa.
Built for Both Academics and Athletics
Most schools tend to lean one direction: strong academics or strong athletics.
This model is intentionally built for both.
The IB curriculum is globally recognized and known for being rigorous. It’s the kind of academic track that prepares students for competitive colleges and develops strong critical thinking skills.
At the same time, the daily 90-minute training block gives student-athletes something that’s hard to find in a traditional school schedule; consistent, structured development without sacrificing academics.
For families juggling club sports, travel schedules, and academics, that’s a big deal.
Small Founding Class = More Attention
The school is starting with just 9th and 10th grade this fall and will grow into a full four-year high school over time.
The founding class is expected to be around 150 to 200 students.
That’s small.
And small usually means:
- Teachers actually know your kid
- Less overcrowding
- More personalized attention
- A tighter-knit school culture
For a lot of families, that’s exactly what they’ve been looking for... but haven’t been able to find in traditional public school settings.
Why This Matters for East Valley Families
Here’s the bigger picture.
Every year, there are families in Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek, and Chandler quietly weighing big decisions:
- Do we pay for private school?
- Do we move to a different district?
- Do we leave Arizona altogether for better options?
And those decisions aren’t small; they’re financial, emotional, and long-term.
When something like NEWS Point Academy enters the market, it shifts that entire conversation.
For some families, it removes the need to spend $25K+ a year on tuition.
For others, it eliminates the idea of relocating just for school options.
It doesn’t replace every need...but it absolutely changes the math.
Final Thoughts
I don’t have any affiliation with the school.
I just pay attention when something shows up that has the potential to impact how families live, plan, and make decisions out here.
This is one of those things.
